DuChene (sad) >Summary: "service gmond stop" warnings Initial Comment: Executing a "service ganglia stop" sometimes issues warnings about nonexistant PIDs. This is most likely due to a race condition and linux's broken threads model -- some kind of "ps | grep gmond" is used to get a list of PIDs to kill, and after the main thread (usually the first one killed, because it will generally be the lowest numbered PID) is killed, all the other threads are automatically killed by the OS, so when the script tries to kill all the other PIDs, they are non-existant. Typical solutions to this include: - saving the main PID upon starting gmond in a file somewhere (/var/run/gmond or something like that -- look at other init.d scripts for examples) - sending the stderr of "kill" to /dev/null ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Jason Brechin (brechin) Date: 2003-03-06 15:31 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=274641 Since ganglia is not included with OSCAR, should we remove this from the OSCAR bug tracker? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Jeff Squyres (jsquyres) Date: 2002-11-16 15:53 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=11722 Changing title of bug to match reality. Should have done this in last submission; sorry... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Jeff Squyres (jsquyres) Date: 2002-11-16 15:52 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=11722 Sorry -- I probably meant "gmond", not "ganglia". The problem still exists (just verified it with 2.0b2 and with latest CVS). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Steven A.
