Thanks for the tip on the ethtool rpm, i wasn't aware of what did the
check_link_down().

On the second item, X is running on my vmware guest running RH9.0 without
a problem, but i'm using VMware WS 3.x, not the new 4.x release so maybe
that's the trick.
