FYI-
I've got my hands on a RH8.0 x86-64 preview release (gingin?). I think it was a free download, although I'll have to check and make sure that's supposed to be the case. ;-)

Yes, the SuSE that's on them is an x86-64 distro. RH 9 is not. The RPMs are built for i386, and there are no kernel RPMs for x86-64. RedHat's site makes no mention of any distro compatible with x86-64. In that case, leave SuSE on them, it'll give us a good reason to make SuSE work ;)

Keep in mind that we'd want an opteron (x86-64) OS on them. I don't remember if there are any free ones out there, but if there are, that would be a good place to start. Otherwise, we'll start with whatever works (RedHat). If SuSE starts working one of these days, we'll definitely go back to that.

I guess my original post wasn't that clear, so I'll try again. AMD ships SuSE with the Opterons. This is an x86-64 system.

$ uname -a
Linux linux 2.4.19-SMP #1 SMP Mon Mar 31 23:48:08 UTC 2003 x86_64 unknown
$ cat /etc/SuSE-release
SuSE SLES-8 (AMD64)
VERSION = 8.1
$

We have three (3) systems, all running SuSE.

RH9 for x86 include kernel configs for x86-64, so I presume I can try RH9 on the Opterons to see if it installs. However, regardless of the outcome of the RH9 test, SuSE is currently running.

We'll be beginning Opteron testing as soon as we can get our hands on some Opterons... which, due to bureaucratic delays, will be another month. :(

I have three Opterons running SuSE, which is how AMD is shipping them, at least for now.

I'll assign a person to work on OSCAR on the Opterons.

Which OS is preferred? Current OSCAR says RH, current AMD would be SuSE. We'll try RH9 on one of the boxes to see how that works.
