On the call today, we agreed to move OSCAR's CVS to be Subversion at Indiana University. I did some tests with NCSA a month or three ago and had them do some checkouts, etc. The overall checkout speed was actually a little slower (!), but it was far more reliable and a steady/constant download / upload speed as compared to SF CVS access. That, plus the added functionality of Subversion were the impeti (hah!) to move to Subversion. A personal note: I have been using Subversion for almost a year now for several large-scale projects and been very happy with it -- it's *not* perfect, but it's a lot better than CVS!
I am in the process of downloading the nightly SF CVSROOT snapshot, creating a SVN repository at IU, etc. It will take several hours (at a minimum).
Anonymous, read-only access will, of course, be available. Details to follow.
*** IMPORTANT DEVELOPER INFORMATION ***
- You will likely need to download and install a Subversion client. Visit http://subversion.tigris.org/ and get the latest version (v1.0.6 -- you have to scroll down to the bottom of the download page -- although I've had pretty good luck with the 1.1RCx releases, too). You *ONLY* need a client install of subversion; don't bother with the approximately 6,032,582 dependencies needed for a server-side build. I personally use something similar to the following to install subversion:
./configure --disable-shared --enable-static --prefix=/whatever --disable-berkeley-db
make all install
- You will need an account at IU to have write access to the repository.
- If you don't have one, send me a username that you want. Please check for uniqueness against http://www.indiana.edu/people/
- If you do have one, ensure that you can still login (remember your password, etc). Try logging into svn.lam-mpi.org via ssh. If you cannot, call (812) 855-6999 to ask for a password reset (be sure to have your IU account name handy).
More information will be coming after the SVN import is complete, etc.
