Sigh...

I could reproduce the bug yesterday. Today, I marched through every version 
since 2700 looking to isolate it, and could not reproduce it, not once.

Perhaps there was some cruft in my working copy...

It could be due to creating the dist tarball, which both Thomas and I did 
before we stumbled upon the error.  Both of us struggled with it.

I'll go back to ia64 testing now...
