The archives might be able to offer you some information on this issue. It's been touched before. I haven't looked, but last I remember, someone (Sean Dague?) indicated that ext3 tests had shown some performance declines relative to ext2, and was not worth doing on a compute node that certainly should be rebuildable. Maybe there is new data here? No matter what though, I wouldn't arbitrarily switch w/o some performance numbers to validate the decision.
