Ya.
So there are still Makefile.am's in there, as you noted -- those were generated by autogen.sh, and svn didn't know anything about them. I just did "svn rm fedora1", so svn forgot all about the directory. But when you did the update, it tried to delete the directory but then saw those non-SVN-controlled files in there and therefore simply deleted all previously-svn-controlled files but left all non-svn-controlled files (including the directory) alone -- it'll never delete files that it doesn't know about.
