I can probably take a look at it. I have added code in the trunk that will let the user easily tweak the timeout by changing one variable, but your method seems feasible. I'll take a look at it when I get the chance.
There is also an open bug/task about deleting jobs that are stuck in Torque/MAUI, also another note that in MAUI there's an option to force jobs to start. 2 other issues we can look into.
