Atlast I could see a positive message regarding mpi tag. I repackaged lam (mpich for later) and switcher packages and now the output seems to be better. But anyway I need to verify again and the error was because of the missing postinst scripts. The following is the log:
--> About to run /opt/oscar/packages/switcher/scripts/post_install for switcher
Setting default for tag mpi ("lam-7.1.1")
Attribute successfully set; new attribute setting will be effective for future shells
building file list ... done
switcher.ini
thankyou.
regards,
ram.

Good.

These directories (and the files in them) are created when the
lam-switcher-modulefile RPM is installed -- in the %post scriptlet.
They invoke switcher to add the lam* names to the switcher repository
(which ends up making that directory, etc.).
So you might want to look at how you converted the
lam-switcher-modulefile to an RPM. I don't know exactly what the MPICH
RPM does (who maintains that, anyway?), but it's something similar.
