I'd prefer to take this out completely. It is actually nonsense to let the mpi packages set themselves as system default. This way the system default depends on which package one installs last (or first). It is a source of trouble, no
matter whether with "!=" or "==".

I agree. This is an artifact of pre-configurator OSCAR; it can probably go (similar with LAM's .spec).
