The tar-ustar option is introduced in Automake 1.9, I will make that change as well.

But I can see how this would be confusing.  I'll fix the message.

More specifically, it is possible that everything works fine with 
2.57.  But no one has done any testing to confirm this (I somewhat 
doubt that <2.59 will work because of the form of AC_INIT that we're 
using, but don't know offhand).
