I am glad to hear that you have a workaround. Did you need to add
Provides: libgfortran
or
Provides: libgfortran = 4.0.1
or
Provides: libgfortran = 4.0.1-5mdk
?
I'd like to know which variant is enough.

It would be great if you could test the compat-* RPM. If that works I think it
might be easier to ship that one (1.5k) with OSCAR than explain people how to
rebuild the libgfortran0 package for Mandriva 2006.
