Title: Re: [Oscar-devel] SSI-OSCAR + Kernel Picker
Hi Jean:

Thanks for taking the time to write the document in the Wiki and for following up with the email, I really appreciate that.

OSCAR5 is currently slated for feature freeze this upcoming Friday.  I suspect we can continue development on Kernel Picker (since it is a blocker right now) even after we freeze and branch for 5.0.

However, I do not think we have time for a complete re-write.  So let's see if we can compromise a bit so that we can all move forward.

I have a couple of questions:

In the "kp_funct.svg" diagram, what exactly do you mean by "Change deployment method for a boot config"?  Do you mean deployment method like SystemImager, kickstart, AutoYaST, FAI, etc.?

And I'm a bit confused regarding the relationship between GRUB/ISOLINUX - can you perhaps elaborate on the "Change bootparams for a boot config" bit?

In a nut shell, you need Kernel Picker to be able to:

- Choose a particular kernel to be installed in an image (do you also need the capability to change the kernel of a running system?)
- Change the boot arguments (like append?) of a running kernel and/or from image

I believe Erich can provide you with some ideas to use SystemConfigurator and other associated OSCAR tools to achieve your goal.

Thanks!

Bernard

Subject: Re: [Oscar-devel] SSI-OSCAR + Kernel Picker

Hi,
I've written the specifications for KernelPicker on the trac wiki :
http://svn.oscar.openclustergroup.org/trac/oscar/wiki/KernelPicker

This include a few new tables for ODA and some methods more. On the
outline, I put these new methods into new classes but in the current
ODA, all methods belongs to the same big class. Maybe it is better to
keep the current way even if this class is becoming bigger and bigger ?

Maybe somethings things can miss but it may be enough to figure out the
way I see KernelPicker. IMO, a complete rewrite is necessary, because
the current version does not interface with any of the OSCAR components
: Packman, ODA, or SIS.

I have time to spend on it. Our goal is to have a new SSI-OSCAR version
based on Kerrighed as soon as the latter is released. That should be
done in a few weeks but we don't know exactly when. For SSI-OSCAR to be
useful, it seems that KernelPicker should be fully functionnal, as I
described it into the wiki :
- support bootparams management for each node
- select kernel package selection through capacities (SMP, SSI...) and
using PackMan
- support kernel deployment with PXE or in local (through
SystemInstaller as it does the whole job, and quite well : can you
confirm ?).

So, when do you plan OSCAR 5 to be ready  ? I can help to make
KernelPicker ready for OSCAR 5. The idea is to make SSI-OSCAR a simple
package for OSCAR and not a package plus a hack. I think this can be
done only if KernelPicker is ready, isn't it ?

Regards,
Jean
