It's a bad idea and leads to network trouble. Many network daemons use the hostname for detecting to which address (ethernet interface) they should bind their service. With hostname I mean the output of the command "hostname". Normally you'd resolve to two different names: - external interface should resolve to the name you have in your DNS for the cluster head (eg: ocluster.hpce.nec.com) - internal interface should resolve to a fake name, valid only inside the cluster (eg: master.cluster) I prefer to have the HOSTNAME set to the internal interface name. This way I avoid a lot of trouble with daemons like maui, torque and others. Unfortunately renaming the internal interface _after_ the OSCAR installation is a bad idea, so what you can do is just leave the internal name and hostname as they are (janus.androticus) and add a line to assign the external interface another name. Rebooting the master might make sense at this stage, such that the services are restarted cleanly and bound to the expected ports and interfaces.
