I don't think this is an issue specifically to do with VMware as this usually happens when SystemConfigurator failed to do its job. You might want to post the log message during the imaging process at the end when SystemConfigurator runs so that we can figure out what went wrong. On the other hand we actually have a VMware headnode appliance for OSCAR that has newer code from trunk and may work better for you (and I believe users have tried it and it works perfectly fine).
