Found the reason and it is trivial: we used to build lam with g77, and RHEL4
doesn't have gfortran installed by default. gfortran comes with gcc4-gfortran.
I'm not sure we should force installing all of gcc4 on RHEL4 nodes, seems to
be easier to simply build with g77, like before.
