Some of the 3 Com cards are not supported in the default kernel of systemimager. I faced the same problems with some of the Tyan mobo with built in 3Com nic. You can either build your own kernel or download one from the following site
http://www.dannf.org/testing/ If it still fails, then additionally you have to put a floppy drive with local.cfg file on it!! it will get get the IP address , gateway info ... from the local.cfg . You can give either Dynamic or static IP addresses.
