I believe Rich answered your question.  If you can't start an xterm from
your X session you'll get these sorts of errors.  

Also, if you're running the install remotely, say from an SSH connection,
you should also be able to startup xterms, etc.

If you're still getting these sorts of DISPLAY errors outside of OSCAR,
then something is not setup correctly with your X Window environment.
You might also want to print out the value of DISPLAY,
        root# echo $DISPLAY
