This is normal behavior. We don't normally install X on the clients, since OSCAR is primarily geared towards high performance computing. X takes up a lot of resources that could be used by other "more important" processes. You can install X on the nodes, however, and it should work fine. If you are using Mandrake, I believe the default rpmlists for the clients include X.
