opium:
is there a way to have opium sync the user accounts on machines other
than those in the cluster? I have several other machines that I cannot
use as cluster nodes for various reasons, but would like to sync the
user accounts. From some of the questions on the list about the support
for nis server or client support by oscar, I was curious about using
opium.

Opium was designed for OSCAR, and thus is based upon a core component - C3. C3 (cpush, specifically) uses rsync to transfer files, so if you can set up the proper C3/rsync environment and modify the /etc/c3.conf file, then I suppose it would be possible. There is a group of people working on nis (and other similar technologies) support. Unfortunately, there is no reliable nis+ server for linux, so it would be client-only. nis (aka yp) is extremely insecure, so we haven't looked into it that much. LDAP is very difficult to set up, but support for it is being worked on.
