I doubt that the MPI installations are your problem, especially since both
of them are failing.
You can try running LAM/MPI or MPICH programs directly and see what the
error output is (so that you can see what the actual problem is, other
than just "failed"), or you can look at the stderr output files from the
PBS jobs.
Those will likely give more details and clues as to what is going on.
