The August 2003 issue contains:

Enterprise Database Backup Check by Ed Schaefer
http://click.sysadmin.email-publisher.com/maabhiWaaZldza2snoyb/
Schaefer presents a method for verifying that remote server sites
are performing scheduled database backups. Under this method,
which avoids the use of "r" commands, the database vendor's access
utility must have remote server access, and the database stored
procedure language must allow execution of a subprogram.

Configuring SAN Storage in Solaris by Brad Bascom and Jason McCullough
Bascom and McCullough outline steps to configure Solaris to attach
to remote disk storage from HP, IBM, and Network Appliance SANs.

Compressing Web Content with mod_gzip and mod_deflate by Stephen Pierzchala
Using a content compression solution is one way to reduce bandwidth
within your company. With that in mind, Pierzchala examines some of
the compression modules for Apache: mod_gzip for Apache 1.3.x and
2.0.x; and mod_deflate for Apache 2.0.x.

Firewall Load Balancing by John Paolillo
Paolillo describes the development of a completely redundant,
scalable e-commerce infrastructure consisting of multiple DMZ
(Demilitarized Zones) with no single points of failure.

NFSv4 - An Early Implementation by Mark Perino
To address perceived deficiencies, NFSv4 aims to improve access
and performance over the Internet, transit firewalls easily, and
scale to a large number of clients per server. Perino explains more
about this new protocol.

Monitoring Sun Volume Manager by Andrew Kyle
Metadevice monitoring should go hand in hand with the general
monitoring of the server, which includes monitoring logs, filesystems,
and performance. Kyle shares a script that provides a simple but
effective way to monitor the volume manager setup.

A Universal Firewall Reporting Tool
by Bob McCormick, Greg Hartung, and Zachary Conger
Using some relatively simple Perl scripts, a PostgreSQL database,
and a network sniffing utility, the authors developed a system to
report on the Internet-bound user HTTP traffic through several
high-traffic firewalls.
