The only method I've known in the past is basing it on previous runs and factoring in hardware differences. Inputs to the app are factors too of course. But here, I've just stated the obvious. I've never heard of any better method.

I was wondering how easy is it for users to figure out the amount of time they need to run their job. This is necessary if we are to impose a time-limit on the short queues (only for jobs <2 min for instance).
