PBS should support adding nodes while the server is running without any problem... Maui, I'm not as sure about... but I've never heard of any issue until now.
Deleting nodes may possibly cause PBS problems... not due to PBS, but due to a bad order of operations in the delete node process. Just an FYI in case you run into it.

Hi Jeremey:
What I found out was that after I flush out the PBS queue and restarted the server, everything seems to be okay now (though it currently doesn ot have as many jobs queued as when it was dying previously).
I have a feeling it is because I added OSCAR nodes while the PBS server is running - this probably caused some issues with the scheduler.
I will try this again and see if it causes the same problem.
Thanks,

Bernard-
OpenPBS will definitely scale well beyond 35 nodes. 64 nodes should work well w/o any scaling issues. That's not saying 128 up to 512 won't work either... although it does start having some issue at that point.
I've got nothing to offer you on your problems with them right now other than that it's probably not a scale issue.

I am interested in finding out what sort of node # limitations people are running into for openPBS + MAUI. What is the max # of nodes that they can handle before they start falling apart? We are talking about the stock openPBS + MAUI from OSCAR v2.3.1.
Previously I had 32 nodes on OSCAR and things are running fine. Just now I added 3 more nodes to it and the whole system starts falling apart - some times MAUI would be stuck at 99.9% and some times pbs_server would be stuck.
Couldn't find much debug info in /var/spool/pbs/server_logs but it just seems weird that it would start behaving like this with just 35 nodes.
If you guys have any suggestions, please let me know, because honestly I am stumped. I am considering installing scalable openPBS to replace openPBS as it seems to have a lot more bug-fixes and work a lot better.
Thanks for your time.
Cheers,
Bernard
