There are 2 ways to 'fix' your problem:
1) Turn off the rsync daemon on the server after initial imaging of client nodes
2) Mung the HD boot sector before you need to load an image to a HD with existing OS -> dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/h(s)da count=2, and then reboot it
Cheers,

I now have a possibly bootable image that gets transferred across. It fails on USB probing on a machine on which I can select network boot or harddisk boot and that has a VDU attached.
The nodes I actually want to install on have only a serial console, and so there is no way to select hard disk or network boot since the serial console isn't accessible at the point when the decision would need to be made. In any event I want to be able to choose the type of boot without having to go to the serial console.
Currently the nodes boot and load the operating system from the master, and then require a reboot. After rebooting they go and load the OS from the master again, ad infinitum.
Is there a way of stopping this and getting them to configurably boot from the disk when I need them too?
