Hi Frank 

Thanks very much for getting back to me after a frustrating couple of 
days. I'm actually quite glad that the problem was something obscure and 
your explanation makes sense at a first glance. 

We are using fairly new MSI mainboards, 2.8 GHz Intel PIV(HT) processors 
and a mix of Seagate and Maxtor 8GB harddrives, with D-LINK NIC's, using 
the sundance driver. 


I didn't think the error of not finding /etc/fstab really made that much 
of a difference, but having the wrong kernel driver does. I compiled the 
kernels for PXE-booting and the kernel that the node would be booted with 
by hand, because the stock PXE-boot kernel doesn't contain the driver for 
our network cards. Since I've already spent days trying to diagnose this 
problem, I would very much appreciate it if you could point me at the 
correct kernel and perhaps the first reference to it in the list.
