I think you need to use the switcher program to switch between using MPICH and LAM... For more information about switcher, check out 'man switcher'.
At any rate, for your case, you probably want to do something like: switcher mpi = lam-6.5.9 When you open another shell, your mpi environment will be LAM instead of MPICH!
