Ciao Bruce,
Oscar installer checks several times the distribution you have in order to install rpms or to set exectutables path. After making some changes to the scripts (pearl) and config files (xml) involved (i cannot perform the installation without changing those files, as the OS is not recognized ("unknownLinux") and it fails) associating the "unknownLinux" string with RedHat releases accepted (RedHat 8 in most cases), OSCAR GUI appears but when making the client image, it hangs. In particular it hangs when trying to configure the disk-partition.
I'm thinking to use directly SIS, but managing 64 nodes means not only installing them...i definetly hope this issues could be resolved ;-)
Concerning Fedora, here at ESA we have some strict security policy...for example i cannot install anymore RH7.3 even if it's the most compatible OS with GRID tecnology (i know that many users are experimenting various problems with GRID+SL yet) and this is the reason i prefear installing SL
Thanks & cheers
Vega

Ciao Vega.
We here in Cape Town are part of the ALICE experiment at CERN's LHC...

We are considering this move towards Scientific Linux that is being
made by CERN and the compatibility with OSCAR also bothers us. We are
using a very hacked version of OSCAR-3 with RedHat 9 at the moment,
and are considering what the next software upgrade should be. Our
choice at the moment seems to be Fedora Core 3 and OSCAR-4 (although
the compatibility with FC3 has yet to be tested). I would be very
interested to see if OSCAR-4 would work with Scientific Linux. Perhaps
someone at CERN can commission a test. I know there are people at CMS
also using OSCAR (or who were wanting to use it...)
We are less constrained than most groups, but we are moving to become
part of the EU-DataGrid, so compatibility is important. What troubles
did you have with OSCAR-3 and RHEL ?
Ciao,
Bruce
