Here is a link to a very nice FAQ written on Beowulf style cluster computing.
http://www.beowulf.org/overview/faq.html >From an OSCAR perspective the answer to your question is yes, modification would be required. OSCAR is designed to be used with programs that are specifically coded to take advantage of a parallel computing environment. OSCAR is an attempt to bring together best practices in open source software into a user-friendly package that is accessible to inexperienced Linux users (even to some extent new or non-programmers) and still delivers "high-performance" using off-the shelf systems. There are many, many different clustering solutions (especially if you have a significant budget), OSCAR is one of a handful which is Open Source, all of which have different goals in mind. OpenMosix is a solution that tries to hide the parallel aspect of the cluster from the program so that you could theoretically run Minesweeper on it without modification (though it would likely run slower this way) which is a very different approach than OSCAR takes. I am not familiar with the others enough to comment, though I would personally be interested in hearing what others have to say about the "competition".
