The output was exactly the same, after quitting the installer, setting the
OSCAR_VERBOSE environment variable, and re-starting the installer.

I sent the error message to a friend who has experience with Itanium2 clusters,
and he said that he had seen this before, that it was a missing RPM -- it's
either an RPM that's missing, or a dependency that is missing, but that there
is a bug in 4.2.1 that means it won't tell you what RPM the check found
missing. That sort of makes sense, as I was wondering why this got printed:
"ERROR: The following RPMs cannot be installed:" but that the line after it was
blank.

Is this something that has been seen or reported by others? I took the RHEL4
for ia64 rpmlist and edited that to make my list, but at this point, if this is
truly what's wrong, I guess I'll have to go check each RPM in the list by hand
to make sure it's present and that all its dependencies are met. That seems
rather tedious...

You might try typing "export OSCAR_VERBOSE=3" and re-running
install_cluster. That might give us some more information.
