With Oscar, couldn't you just create an image, and then assign that 
image to a node, but do that manually for every node?  Then you can 
customize package lists and all of that before building the image, or 
hack around on the image after it's created?

Another option would be to use Oscar to build out a common base image, 
and then use scripting based on hostname (or something) to customize the 
nodes the way you want them? 

In either case, it's a lot of work if the node count is large, and if 
it's HPC, I can't think of a good reason to have 1:1 image:node ratios.
