Since you are having problems with 4.2 I would suggest trying the
4.2.1"release" which in my experience is much more stable and has some
significant bug fixes (this is assuming you need the 2.4 kernel from SL3, if
you can upgrade to SL4 then I would of course suggest OSCAR 5.0). This may
or may not fix the problem, since it is hard to tell what the cause of it is
since it is a part of the install process where very little is logged.

First off, make sure you pushed the "Setup Network Boot" button on the MAC
collection window. Not doing so can cause errors like this.

If you have floppies or CDs available on the nodes, to try either an OSCAR
boot floppy/cd (I don't remember which we were up to in 4.2) or the
etherboot tool (http://www.etherboot.org/wiki/index.php). Etherboot may be
a help if the card's PXE boot code is not quite right (and the etherboot
code is better, heh). The documentation didn't used to be very clear that
it could be used for the purpose, but one of the things you can do is put
the PXE ROM code onto a floppy disk, which lets you use it to network boot
using the code off the floppy. This has helped me on occasion, especially
with older machines which didn't support PXE (or didn't support it well).

When I had this problem it was due to bad GigE network card drivers. You
might check the manufacturer's website to see if they have any updated
drivers available. Also check for BIOS updates for the node machines.

Firewalls are also a posibility, but since it is getting an IP this is not
especially likely. It is never a bad idea when you have odd network
problems to try a full reinstall and make sure all firewall components (OS
firewalls, SE Linux, and the OSCAR pfilter package) are turned off.

You should also check the /var/log/messages on the head node for unusual
error messages.
