I also had a problem with ganglia when setting up an oscar cluster.

I use unicast, with a number of the following sections

udp_send_channel {
/*  mcast_join = 239.2.11.71 */
    host = 10.0.0.12
   port = 8649
}


udp_send_channel {
/*  mcast_join = 239.2.11.71 */
    host = 10.0.0.11
   port = 8649
}


and pointed gmetad at the hosts 10.0.0.11-12

that worked for me.
