Hi Allan,

The head node and the client node both have an onboard ethernet card (Gigabit), and both are connected the a swithch. The head node has an additional ethernet card (eth0) and is connected to the outside world (internet). This additional network card (slower) should use a different driver compared to the onboard ethernet card.

What should I do to ensure that the client would get the proper kernel/driver during the client installation for the above configuration?

BTW, pxe booting did not work for me (unknown reason). So I had to create a boot CD for the client installation. In addition, even though the client installation failed, I can ping from the head to the client and also the client to the head node. I can also ssh to the head node from the client. Does this mean that the client got the proper driver for the ethernet card?

Thanks a lot for your time and answer.

Sincerely,
Shiang-Tai

Hi Shiang-Tai,
Yes this is becuase the kernel on your head node has a driver for the
ethernet card which is probably connected to a switch and then on to the
clients.
If you use UYOK this kernel may not be having the same ethernet card drivers as
the head node connected to the switch. Below you mention the head node and
client specs are the same but are the ethernet cards identical? If your using
UYOK with multiple ethernet cards on head node and client nodes check that for
pxe booting the client the ethernet card for the client is exactly the same as
the ethernet card of the head node connected by ethernet cable to a switch in a
ring topology.

Hi Allan,

Thanks for the reply.

I have indeed used the UYOK (as can be seen in http://pastebin.ca/998121). For unknown reason, the client node keeps complaining "nc: connect: No route to host" during the installation. Could it be a hardware/BIOS setting problem? The spec of the head node and the client is the same.

Thanks,

Hi Shiang-Tai,
When you get to Setup Networking which kernel are you using to boot your clients? The regular kernel does not work. Try UYOK(Use your own kernel ) from the setup networking menu after yummimg the latest kernel to the head node. Then try installing the clients. Try $OSCAR_HOME/install_cluster ethx where x = 0 1 2 3 ... as in your case and when you get to the setup networking menu try UYOK.
Hope this helps!

Hi Michael,

Thanks for your reply.

I tried "/etc/init.d/mysqld status" and the result showed that mysql was running. And even if I execute "/etc/init.d/mysqld restart", I still get "DBD::mysql::st execute failed: MySQL server has gone away at /opt/oscar/lib/OSCAR/oda.pm line 802." when I click on the "Setup Networking" button.

I then tried to start over (/opt/oscar/scripts/start_over), rebooted the server, and launched the OSCAR wizard. But this time the client installation got stuck after received boel_binaries.tar.gz. The terminal output from the client is http://pastebin.ca/998123 and the oscar log file is posted to http://pastebin.ca/998121.

Any hint will be highly appreciated. Thank you.

Sincerely,
Shiang-Tai

It looks like your mysql daemon on the head node died or was not started.

Try doing "/etc/init.d/mysqld restart" and try reimaging the nodes.
