This time, I ran start_over and then went through the whole
file system removing everything related to OSCAR and System
Imager.  It must have helped, because I was able to build
an image of CentOS 5.2 with no problem by following the
directions at
http://svn.oscar.openclustergroup.org/php/beta/README.

Actually, there were some error messages during the process,
but things chugged along to the conclusion.  The log file is
 > 1MB, so I won't attach it here.  It's posted at
http://www-glast.stanford.edu/~pln/oscarinstall.log

I won't be able to reboot the client until tomorrow, so stay
tuned.
