Never mind......

The problem was on the install server. Several different kernel
versions had been installed, and each left behind a directory
tree under /lib/modules. For some reason some of the more recent
ones had links back to older ones. The most recent tree was copied
to the client without following the links. Once I cleaned up
the server, this problem went away.

Now I'm all the way to formatting the disk. It didn't work on the first
try, but I think I understand the problem. Stay tuned.
