Hi,

Been installing xCAT for the past 2 years on various clusters (a couple of IBM based X systems, but mostly SuperMicro twins and 2sqU).

In the SM HW, configuring IPMI (which is essential for xCAT management) is a breath. Easy as pie (or insert whatever is equivalent to 2+2=4 in your culture).

Quite happy with it, but note that unless you purchase the IBM hpc package (i.e. loadleveler at. al.) you have to install your own scheduler. I have been installing and using slurm (with munge) and deployment is quite simple once you build RPMS.

Same note regarding IB stack - although RH/SL/OL/CentOS all provide ofed RPMS (and xCAT has a decent ib installation postscript), I prefer to build from vanilla OFED, with latest openmpi srpms dropped into the SRPM dir "as-is". works quite well.

All in all, for me (and the last 8 or so clusters I built) - xCAT + SLURM + OFED was easy to install and maintain.

Hello,

OK. So it appears that Oscar is very much dead. Does anyone know of any

similar solutions which are still active?

I have come across two that appear to still be “alive”: Rocks and Warewulf.

Does anyone know of any others? A lot of the others that I have been aware

of in the past (Oscar, Perceus, Caos, etc.) all lead to dead-ends web links or bits

that are several years old.

Thanks in advance,
