Hi,

I'm a Mozilla Rep f(empowered volunteer arm of the Mozilla Foundation) from
Vancouver Island Canada, long time Open Source contributor and an Senior
Developer at Royal Roads University.

I've been a member of this list for a while but compelled to post after
reading:
http://opensource.com/education/13/2/next-generation-open-source-hackers ,
and seeing the responses and enthusiasm around creating a new generation of
open source hackers.

As part of the Mozilla Webmaker initiative I've been running local hackjams
for youth in my area using tools Hackasaurus, Thimble, and Popcorn Maker
(but mixing in a few things here and there) with huge success, and adoption
from local youth groups. I am absolutely in love with empowering youth in
technology, learning by making & hacking/remixing - was how I learned.

the one component Webmaker identifies as a
Literacy<https://wiki.mozilla.org/Learning/WebLiteracies>
is the the opportunity to experience open communities, and contribute to
Open Source projects. I wrote an early blog post
<http://tiptoes.ca/?p=837>with an idea, which has grown into
'Generation Open', and now we are are
way - setting up a framework for youth and mentors to begin and contribute
to open source projects involving youth. http://genopen.org is currently a
evolving as a portal with learning 'hacktivities' for educators and mentors
to guide youth.

These are early days, and I would absolutely *LOVE* feedback, ideas for
easy online collaborative projects for youth or existing ones we can
profile, offers to contribute of course would also be fantastic. We are
100% volunteer with no funding right now, so we're moving as fast as we can
- and setting up an Open Badge opportunity for collaborators as well.

Thanks for reading,

-Emma
