hi all,

I was drafting this for another htread where someone asked for a
busines plan idea.... but never completed it and didn't get sent. So I
decided to post it here instead as it sounds more appropriate.

Altho thsi project is not directly for gov, it is related to Gov as it
involves GST...

Pls read on...

-------------------------------------------------------------------
To develop a 'simple' Point of Sales System based on FOSS.

The reason being, Malaysia will implement GST. And once you have GST,
every SME/Retailer will need to implement a system, because
calculation for GST is too tedious/complex to do manually. That's why
you will notice that countries that implement GST, all retailers have
a POS.

The POS should be implementable on a low-cost platform, ie: a Netbook
(may need to add a cashbox, external screen, keyboard, barcode
readers...), currently most of the commercial dedicated POS (Casio,
Toshiba, etc..) is expensive, and I dont know what the PC based
systems cost but they are not low cost.

The key feature sets for this POS would be fairly standard, but the
design should be to focus on ease of use, the user wouldn't need to
know anything about Linux/BSD, it should just boot up and present the
POS. Setup and configuration should be as simple as possible, have
capabilities like being able to import Excel files etc.. And of course
local GST tables has gotta be in, and create uploadable electronic
reports on GST to Income Tax or which ever Gov dept.

Of course it would need to have a basic Inventory System (for products
and price lists, with multiple pricing), and simple book-keeping.
Don't need accounting functions, as data should be exportable to any
acctg system.

Also important is the ability to interface with devices like Bar-code
readers, receipt printers and cash-boxes.

The business model would be to provide supporting services. Imagine if
1,000's of implementation would be to take place, there will be need
for training, support and hardware maintenence. These are all
recurring revenues... And there also be a need for customization
services. What we are gunning here is not just an App, WE ARE BUILING
A FOSS ECOSYSTEM where many can participate.

A FOSS POS running on low-end hardware would easily find widespread adoption.

I visualise this as a web based system, using a browser front end.
This way, to expand to a multi-headed POS (ie many POS to a centralise
DB) should not be a problem. The POS shlould be able to operate
standalone first, but with capability to being client-server. The
standalone capability would be useful in case the network goes down.
I envisage this to run on one of the lightweight aglle languages
Python, PHP, Ruby

The future of this product would be, to grow and add functionality by
adding modules, or have APIs to interface to other established Systems
(ie: Adempiere, I know Adempiere as a POS but to set up a ERP just to
run POS doesn't fit with the ease-of setup principle! ;-)

Furthermore OSDC can take up this project and make/build it into a
nation-wide community - provide skills training, organise support
services and be able to offer nation-wide support for everyone, from
the Pau-lady to the local supermarket...

Although thie product is 'simple', I see it as the project has a huge
scope. From the organisational perspective, I see this project as not
just building and delivering a product, but building a whole
ecosystem, that could build and provide opportunities for many, not
just IT/programmers but also for supporting services.

Anyone game for this? I for one can contribute my time/skills....
