The promise of foss is that, not just you able to learn it, you can use it anyway you want.
If there is issue, you can investigate it, you can go down to the source code, to look into it and fix it and if there is feature you really need, your find out in the source, and if necessary change the source code. and share it so that people can enhance your solution. You don't have to wait for vendor, Already for a few time, the ability to look into the source code save my time, because of no documentation. And the ability to monkey patch a code, to get a temporary solution that I need. The premise of foss is that you don't need to ask permission from vendor to do any of above.
