*Hackers go crackers*

I just got back from a pretty amazing event. A large company called YTL has,
in under a year, invested £400,000,000 in building a new super-speed
telecoms network in Malaysia, promising *WiMAX speeds* nationwide. Neat,
yes, but why does it matter particularly to me? Because, having evaluated
iPhone, BlackBerry, Windows Phone and more, YTL has chose to standardise on
Android. The company has had its own custom-built handsets produced to take
advantage of the WiMAX speeds, and each one has free software at its core.
In fact, achieving the same with *iPhone or Windows Phone would be
impossible* because they are so locked down by Apple and Microsoft. As far
as I know this is the biggest concerted roll out of free software for years,
so if you're in Malaysia, pick up a "Yes" phones and let us know what you
can do with it.

On a related note, this issue we've got a a great feature on hacking, and
this is something I really want to encourage. If you're running a Linux
phone or laptop, chances are you carry ut wuth you everywhere, so why not
have a go at *scratching your own itches* and contribute to the greater open
source good?
