learning grails with netbeans is ok. there is code completion, so you can look up at functions / classes etc. it is learning by doing. it works for other languages as well : java / php / c++
another part of the learning process which i am currently doing is actually compiling various articles about grails, trying it out, then describing about it in malay. sort of like a mental exercise by viewing it in a different language. next article will be about gorm - grails object relational mapping - administrating the database with no sql code ! after that will be a series about grails and jquery. then will come back to access control.
