Using GPS To Prevent Train Crashes In India
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/09/06/2147228

dave420 writes "The BBC has an [0]article outlining plans in India to
use GPS technology to alert train drivers of obstructions on the
tracks, automatically stopping the train if the driver fails to take
action. This sounds like a good use of cheaply-available technology to

Essay Grading Software For Teachers
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/09/07/0139225

asjk writes "Software to help teachers with grading has been around for
sometime. This is true even with respect to grading essays. A new tool,
called [0]Criteria, will look at grammar, usage, and even style and
organization. It works by being trained by at least 450 essays scored
by two professionals. The difference this time? Here is a snip from the
article: '"There's a lot of skepticism," Dr. Spatola said. "The people
opposed see it dehumanizing the student's papers, putting them through
some sort of mechanical, computerized system like the multiple choice
tests. That's really not the case, because we're not talking about
eliminating the human element. We're making the process more
    efficient."'"

More Criticism of SCO's Claims To UNIX
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/09/06/2351216

inc_x writes "[0]GROKLAW has a [1]compelling analysis that shows that
SCO's claims that it owns the UNIX operating system are not very
truthful. [2]The Open Group [3]confirms this position: "Statements that
SCO "owns the UNIX operating system" or has "licensed UNIX to XYZ", are
clearly inaccurate and misleading." It seems that SCO finds it
increasingly difficult to distinguish facts from fiction. Last week SCO
claimed 'This IP battle is only one part of SCO's business and is an
add-on component. The core of SCO's business is profitable,' not
bothered by the fact that they had [4]claimed the opposite in their SEC
filing: 'If we do not receive SCOsource licensing revenue in future
quarters and our revenue from the sale of our operating system platform
products and services continues to decline, we will need to further
reduce operating expenses in order to maintain profitability or
    generate positive cash flow.'"

Google Removes Kazaa Links, Keeps Sponsored Links
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/09/06/224210

[0]SanityInAnarchy writes "Everyone should remember when Google
[1]removed several links that Sharman (owner of [2]Kazaa) claimed were
infringing their copyrights. At first, only real results were touched
and sponsored links [3]left alone. Well, that sponsored link was

RIAA Parses 'P2P' As 'Peer 2 Porn'
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/09/06/1911237

watchful.babbler writes "Having largely failed to galvanize public and
political action against P2P systems, the RIAA has [0]mounted a
campaign to link P2P systems with child pornography (NYT, reg.
required). The result is H. R. 2885 ([1]available via Thomas), which
has the remarkably clear and honest intent 'To prohibit the
distribution of peer-to-peer file trading software in interstate
commerce.' Amongst other things, the proposed law will require the
creation of 'do-not-install beacon products' (do-not-ask, you really
don't want to know), force P2P apps to include warning labels that
users may be exposed to pornography, and require P2P developers and
distributors to obtain and store users' personal information --
ostensibly for age verification, but one can think of other reasons
that the RIAA might be interested in that info. Worse yet, even given
the 'operation exemption' (Sec. (4)(b)(1)(C) in the bill), applications
such as AIM and iChat appear to fall under these provisions."

Goodbye, Galileo
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/09/06/1650249

[0]deglr6328 writes "On the 21st of this month the [1]Galileo Space
Probe, which has been orbiting Jupiter for nearly eight years, will
[2]plummet fatefully into the crushing pressures and searing heat of
that planet's interior. The spacecraft's 14 year journey has brought
the discovery of, among other things, the first [3]moon orbiting an
asteroid, the first remote detection of life on earth when Carl Sagan
used data from an onboard infrared spectrometer to observe the spectral
signature of Oxygen in our atmosphere, it has [4]caught snowflakes of
Sulfur Dioxide as it flew through the [5]plume of an erupting volcano
on Io, [6]snapped pictures of comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 as it smashed into
Jupiter's atmosphere and most importantly, provided proof a >60 Km deep
[7]ocean on [8]Europa with hints of oceans on Callisto and
Ganymede([9]listen to Ganymede's eerie sounding plasma wind). And all
this with scarcely more [10]computing power than a late '70s video game
and a maximum data transfer rate of ~120 bits/s over a distance of more
than 600 million Km. In a mission spanning three decades, the Galileo
space probe has answered many of humanity's questions about space and
presented us with the knowledge to ask many more which will be answered
by the [11]next generation of Jovian explorer. Goodnight Galileo."

FCC Ponders Removing Morse Code Reqs for Amateur Radio Licenses
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/09/06/1348258

[0]Nalez writes "This story on the ARRL website [1]outlines six

Politics in Free Software

    - by Tom Chance - When he added a line crediting the United States Army

and his credit was removed. However, when the KDE Web site took part in

politics was important to KDE. So what role does politics play in KDE,
