SEC Settles Microsoft Accounting Investigation
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/06/03/0424200

[0]guttentag writes "The Securities and Exchange Commission has
[1]wrapped up its two-year investigation into Microsoft's accounting
practices. The investigation focused on "cookie jar" accounting
practices in which a company reports that it earned less money than it
actually did, secretly storing the unreported money to artificially
boost earnings in the future. The SEC called off its investigation in
exchange for Microsoft's promise that it will not break the rules in
the future, though the company is not admitting that it broke rules in
the past. Microsoft publicly states that it has [2]$40 Billion on
hand." Gates realized a long time ago that regardless of actual
performance, if you "beat estimates" people will buy your stock. So,
he's arranging it so that no matter what the actual performance is,
Microsoft always "beats estimates". If your analyst estimate is low 61
out of 63 times, either A) you need a new analyst or B) someone is
feeding the analyst bad numbers. In this case, probably both.

Sun Discovers Dumb Terminals
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/06/02/232237

Yahoo has a story about how Sun is practicing a sort of floating
workforce - many employees have no permanent desks, they just come in
and [0]log on to a dumb terminal, err, thin client. Besides being a
sneaky way to encourage employees to arrive ever earlier at work, it
probably is cheaper to run the business off a few large Sun servers -
    at least for Sun.

Where UnitedLinux Got It Wrong
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/06/02/218237

An Anonymous Coward writes "A story on NewsForge [ed. note: part of the
[0]keiretsu] suggests that the lack of binaries for UnitedLinux
[1]shows disrespect to the community which created most of the
software. The author suggests a better way for handling the business
problems that a lack of binaries is supposed to solve. Some
particularly clueless reader comments say that UnitedLinux has no
responsibility to cooperate with the community. The thought that
UnitedLinux won't even offer a development distribution to the
community does not sit well with me."

Wireless Congestion
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/06/02/2135234

[0]AllMightyPaul writes "An [1]article on CNN describes the congestion
experienced by many users of wireless networks as more and more people
begin to use them at home and at work. The unregulated frequencies
between 902 and 928, where most Wi-Fi devices operate, sees a lot of
    traffic, apparently."

Sanyo Solar Ark and Giant LED Display
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/06/02/205256

[0]shokk writes "Those of us who have played with CrystalFontz and
Matrix Orbital serial LCD displays for geeky messaging will get a kick
out of the [1]77k+ LED Solar Ark by Sanyo (only 21k of which are using
as red/green/blue combinations for the presentation display). Not only
does this behemoth show off its fantastically huge array of solar
panels generating 530,000kWh/year and its high efficiency [2]white LED
technology, but it also sports a non-chemical water purification system
in a very [3]Feng Shui way. Lighting to restrooms underneath is
provided by fiber optic paths from the white LEDs in the giant display
above." It's a small plant as power plants go (600 kilowatts, when many
plants are hundreds or thousands of megawatts) but it was cheap to
produce, [4]aesthetically pleasing, and of course, non-polluting, so
    that Godzilla won't visit.

Win32/Linux Cross-Platform Virus
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/06/02/1749237

An Anonymous Coward writes "Symantec reports on the first [0]virus to
infect both ELF and PE binaries on Linux and Win32. "The first
    Win32/Linux cross-infector, {Win32,Linux}/Peelf, uses two separate
routines to carry out the infection on PE and ELF files. This variant
of Simile shares a substantial amount of code between the two infection
functions, such as the polymorphic/metamorphic engines, the only
platform-specific parts being the directory traversal code and the API
    usage.""

When Should File Formats Be Placed in the Public Domain?
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/06/02/157208

[0]wccwcc writes "A lot has been said about file formats and standards
creating network effects and huge profits. That said, is there a time
when file formats should enter the public domain, or is it ok for
companies to sit on them forever. [1]These are some ideas on when and
how file formats should enter the public domain, just like trademarks
    do when they become "generic"."

Review: Insomnia
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/05/31/158251

It may not be the summer's happiest movie, but it might be the best
(and there isn't a single marching digital Army, special effect, or
marketing tie-in involved!). Hilary Swank and Robin Williams co-star in
this dark tale of murder and redemption, but it's really Al Pacino's
movie from beginning to end. And he was born to play the role of the
exhausted, tough, morally confused LA homicide cop pursued by the
do-gooders from Internal Affairs (IA), sent off to Alaska to help an
old pal solve a vicious killing. The plot is a touch cheesy at moments,
but the film is wonderfully acted, and beautifully shot. It's also
dark, a great and timely movie. This isn't a
take-your-mind-off-your-troubles summer flick. Neither is it a
mega-epic. SPOILAGE WARNING: Plot discussed, not ending.

In all relationships, communication is a key component to success. If
you can't communicate, your relationships aren't gonna last long. A
good relationship requires hard work, especially if your organization
has several local or county branches and each branch wants to keep the
    others informed of events.
