SDSU Students Create Sporty Hybrid Vehicle
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/06/07/1832254

[0]Nevyan writes "SDSU Engineering students working in conjunction with
real life designers create an electric hybrid vehicle that
actually...well.. [1]looks cool for all the right reasons. Participant
in the Tour de Sol. I happened to see this vehicle on campus at SDSU
and I want to buy one so badly." [2]Njaneer.com has more information
and photos - [3]here's one to give you an idea of the size.

NASA to Investigate Hydrinos
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/06/07/2159210

An Anonymous Coward writes "A new NASA program might once and for all
[0]settle the "hydrino" question. The concept of the hydrino --
hydrogen shrunk below its normal state with the resulting release of
extreme ultraviolet light -- has been derided by the physics
establishment and surprisingly embraced by many engineers and people
with deep pockets. Slashdot [1]hashed the hydrino pretty vigorously in
December 1999. Now NASA is funding independent research into making a
rocket from this novel idea. If it works, we could be seeing a sea
change in physics. If it fails, hydrinos might finally just float away.
There's an [2]active study group of several hundred users (including
some prominent scientists) devoted to debating the possible existence
of hydrinos. In many ways it sprang from slashdot."

Vertical Keyboard vs Carpal Tunnel
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/06/07/1925236

An anonymous reader sent us links to a quite strange [0]vertical
keyboard which also links to a study that claims that this is more
ergonomic than your usual board. Of course at $347 it also better make
    me coffee.

Farscape & Stargate SG-1 New Seasons Tonight
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/06/07/1823203

marekk writes "Frelling A! The fourth season of [0]Farscape, arguably
[1] the best Sci-Fi currently on television premieres tonight on the
[2]SciFi Channel. You can catch the premiere episode, titled "Crichton
Kicks" at 9PM CST. Afterwards, you can watch the premiere of
[3]Stargate SG-1's sixth season, "Redemption"." I've been watching the
SG1 season 1 box set and am impressed. Its a solid show, and I'm
looking forward to season it without the benefit of syndication lag,
even if [1]there are problems. As for Farscape... well, Duh!

Starband Files for Chapter 11
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/06/07/2011201

[0]PalmKiller writes "Well it looks like [1]Starband is going into
chapter 11. I got the email a few days ago. And just when I got CYGWIN
with squid proxy working beautifully. With winproxy I rarely got any
thoughput on my clients (20-50KBytes/sec or 160-360Kbits/sec), on squid
    I finally am getting 80-95KBytes/sec (640-760Kbits/sec continuously)
and some faster bursts. Well, I guess I will ride her till she falls
over and dies." Looks like [2]Echostar's tactics have been successful.
And we just did an article a few weeks ago on [3]Starband's service,
where most commenters weren't very happy.

Game Developers Cracking Down on Cheating
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/06/07/189213

Hector73 writes "ZDNet has an article discussing a [0]growing concern
for the makers of on-line video games. Cheaters and trolls are making
it harder for casual users and newbies to get hooked on the on-line
versions of games. Considering that on-line gaming may become the major
revenue source for game makers over the few years, maybe they will
    actually do something about it."

How Hard is it to Manage Different Unices?
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/06/06/1914225

[0]vrmlguy asks: "Where I work has several Unix-based servers, all
running the same vendor's OS. We are getting ready to buy another big
server, and management wants to get bids from other vendors. However,
our staff is only familar with our current vendor's OS. Yes, I know
that any two flavors of Unix are more alike than not, and yes, I know
about the [1]Rosetta Stone for Unix that makes it easy to transfer
skills. I want to know about the down-side: What's the difference in
the cost of operations between a mono-culture and a shop running two or
    more vendors' OSs?"

Universities Creating Computer Discipline Offices
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/06/07/1648251

geisler writes "The [0]Chronicle of Higher Education has a very good
article on how larger colleges are beginning to create departments to
[1]deal with the social issues related to computer problems and not
depending solely on technical solutions. The [2]University of
Maryland's [3]Project NEThics is used as a prime example."

KPNQWest Admins Keep Bankrupt Network Running
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/06/07/1637250

sebastianw writes "Some of the [0]network administrators from KPNQWest,
although they have been (apparently) ordered to shutdown the network,
took over control of the KPNQWest NOC. They are trying to keep the
network running and keep customers up, regardless of KPNQWest's
insolvency. The company warned on Thursday that they would be forced to
shut down KPNQwest's entire European data network on Monday unless its
customers paid their bills in full immediately." There's a [1]related
story on the Register, talking about the possible effect on UK internet
access. If anyone needs to hire some network engineers...
