Slashdot
H2K2 Conference
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/06/27/0239212

2600's Macki writes in to remind me and everyone else that [0]H2K2 is
coming up shortly, with pre-registration closing on Friday. The
conference will be July 12-14 in New York City, in the exciting yet
inexpensive [1]Hotel Pennsylvania. I could only make the HOPE 2000
conference for one day, but it was quite interesting and it looks like
[2]audio from most of the panels is available, or just check out the
list of [3]panels for 2002 to see if it looks intriguing to you. And if
you read Slashdot, the answer to that is probably "yes".

Salon in Dire Straits
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/06/27/0143209

An anonymous reader submits this well-linked blurb: "It appears the end
may be near for [0]Salon Media Group. Their auditors [1]doubt the
company can stay in business for very much longer. Despite recently
reaching nearly [2]40,000 subscribers, they haven't been able to make
up for lost ad revenue in a down market. As a result, they've
accumulated a deficit of about [3]$75 million. Their best known asset,
besides Salon.com, may be [4]The Well, one of the earliest and most
influential online communities. I hope that it can survive if Salon
    does not."

GUIs for Robots
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/06/27/008218

[0]kabir writes "[1]OpenGL.org has a link to a fun [2] article over at
the [3]Stanford Aerospace Robotics Laboratory. It seems an OpenGL-based
GUI has been developed to enable the operation of multiple complex
field robots by a single operator. The interaction mechanism was
inspired by interface techniques refined in the Real-Time Strategy
(RTS) genre of video games. Fifty years from now I expect all wars to
be fought by giant robots controlled by teenagers."

Draw!
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/06/26/1759201

An anonymous reader writes "[0]Heise (publisher of the famous german
computer magazine [1]c't) started a most unusual CPU benchmark, today.
A dual P4 Xeon 2400 and a dual AthlonMP 2000+ have to prove their
abilities to ... play chess! The opponents are running two of the best
chess AIs (Previews of Deep Fritz 7 and Shredder 6), so there are four
different configurations. With each configuration about 55 matches
(~24h) are played. As yet AMD/Fritz is leading, but the benchmark has
just started. You can follow the duell [2]online [Sorry, site is in
german, but the graphics of the java-applet should be multi-lingual].
What's next? Who wouldn't like to see a Linux/Windows mine sweeper
    death match!"

Pledge of Allegiance Ruled Unconstitutional
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/06/26/1935246

[0]VUSE g-EE-k and entirely too many other people wrote in about an
Appeals Court decision holding that the [1]Pledge of Allegiance, as
recited in its current form in various public schools (often by law),
[2]is unconstitutional. The [3]court's decision (PDF) is available.

Minority Report
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/06/26/2034255

[0]peterwayner writes: "Everyone has heard stories of odd coincidences
from cousins who call each other simultaneously or professors making
the same discovery, but there may be no better proof of synchronicity
than Steven Spielberg's [1]charcoal grey rendering of [2] Philip
Kindred Dick's short story, "Minority Report." This tale of police who
solve crimes before they are committed reached the theaters just a few
weeks after the United States learned that even citizens are being
locked up without a trial or a lawyer because they might turn out to be
terrorists." Read the rest of his review below.

Pet Bugs?
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/06/25/2253259

benreece asks: "During my few years as a programmer/developer I've come
across some strange bugs. Recently I found that Microsoft's
VB/VBScript(ASP) round function has problems (for example,
'round(82.845)' returns '82.84' instead of '82.85'). It took me an
annoyingly long time to realize the problem wasn't mine. I'm wondering
what other obscure, weird, and especially annoying bugs in
languages/compilers/etc have frustrated other developers." Memorable
bugs. Every developer has one. What were yours?

UK Parliament to ban DoS Attacks
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/06/26/1648204

Ian Hill writes "It seems that the UK government is not as
technologically withdrawn as you may think. [0]This bill is an
amendment to the Computer Misuse Act 1990 which bans Denial of Service
attacks by name. It states that a person is guilty of an offence if
they cause, or intend to cause, 'degradation, failure or other
impairment of function of a computerised system.'"
