Gamespy Installer Spreads Nimda
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/06/28/2151214

NSG writes "Yahoo News is running [0]this story about the Nimda virus
    infecting some [1]Gamespy [2]Arcade 1.09 installers. Approximately
3,100 infected files were served in a seven hour period. What
responsibility does Gamespy have to the users who downloaded the
    infected file?"

Own a Little Bit of Berkeley Physics History
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/06/28/2138246

Five foot slide rules? Brass and Wood balances? Bakelite Metering
Equipment. This and more are up on the [0]block as a result of [1]UC
Berkeley's physics department wanting to clear out old gear (they need
the room). The [2] San Francisco Chronicle has a story about auction.
Apparantly, about [3]20 items will be auctioned in a "test the waters"
sales this Sunday, and the balance of the 1000 pieces will be sold July
    28th...

FTC Tells Search Engines to Disclose Paid Links
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/06/28/2119257

linderdm writes "CNN has an [0]article describing how the FTC wants
search engines who receive payment for higher rated links, to disclose
this to users. The concern is that users go to search engines looking
for the best results for their search criteria, not the highest paid
    results for their search."

Boeing Blended Wing Body Aircraft
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/06/28/2118214

pcolley writes "I love it when Science Fiction becomes reality. Boeing
is [0]nearly finished designing their super efficient Blended Wing Body
(BWB) airplane. It looks like the BatJet." Boeing is considering both
    [1]civilian and [2]military roles.

OS X Security Update: Apache, SSL and SSH
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/06/28/2055248

[0]payote writes "Security Update July 2002 includes the updated
    components, Apache v1.3.26, mod_ssl v2.8.9 and OpenSSH v3.4p1, which
provide increased security to prevent unauthorized access to
applications, servers, and the operating system." It's not in my
Software Update window, because I'm still on 10.1.4 (having heard
rumors that RtCW doesn't work on 10.1.5). But it is indeed out, and any
Mac OS X machine whose webserver or ssh server is open to an untrusted
    network needs to upgrade.

Cable Firms Limit Users' Freedoms
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/06/28/2011241

[0]Passacaglia writes "An article in the [1]Washington Post reports
that a coalition of companies, including Dell, Microsoft, IBM, Sun, and
even the [2]BSA, have filed a report with the FCC [3]complaining about
how cable providers are placing restrictions on how subscribers use
broadband access. This is in the wake of the recent FCC [4]ruling that
cable providers need not open their networks to competition from
outside ISPs. The restrictions include limits on VPNs, servers, and
many things that would make broadband really worth having." Meanwhile,
TWC sent [5]nastygrams to people it suspects are using unsecured
wireless networks, [6]skimming the info from the public database of
    wireless access points.

Doom3 and OpenGL2.0
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/06/28/1839257

Screaming Lunatic writes "John Carmack has decided to write an
OpenGL2.0 rendering path for Doom3. You can read [0]his .plan or you
can finger him. This will be huge for the development of OpenGL2.0.
Video cards are typically benchmarked with respect to the framerate
when running Quake3. Future benchmarks will be based on Doom3. This
means IHVs will be somewhat forced to write good OpenGL2.0
    implementations."

U.S. Government Certified Wireless Security Products?
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/06/25/2329252

superid asks: "Our facility is just beginning to install small wireless
802.11b networks to support our office developers and staff. I think
most people end up happy with wireless and enjoy the freedom. Our
little branch office has about 100 people and our whole facility has
close to 3000 people, so it's reasonable to expect our wireless needs
to grow. However, I have just received an email, sent to all network
administrators of our facility, directing us to shut down all wireless
devices until they are certified by our Information Security
department. Of course I'm not surprised by this. I'm aware of the
problems with WEP and tools like airsnort. I know there are numerous
security products and projects, but can any of them trace a lineage
back to FIPS? Wouldn't it be a major victory to see an OSS product
    listed as [0]validated by [1]NIST?"

Atari's 30th Anniversary
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/06/28/1710226

[0]Atarian writes "Atari was officially [1]incorporated 30 years ago.
While many thought Atari started the video game business, that was not
correct, it was Magnavox and its Odyssey console designed by Ralph Baer
that would be the first. Atari would be the company that would put
videogames on the map right from the start back in 1972 with the
release of PONG, its coin-op arcade machine first setup in Andy Capps
Bar in California, the game was a smash hit and people begin lining up
first thing in the morning at Andy Capps just to get inside and play
games on this magic box with a TV inside. Atari would then release its
VCS (Video Computer System aka The Atari 2600) and launch Atari from
its meager $500 starter capital beginnings into a $2 billion dollars in
sales monster in 1982. Atari would later fall to the wayside to be
replaced by Nintendo, then Sega, and othes that followed. Atari is
still around in a small way, and still keeping the name and spirit
alive to this very day, 30 years later. 'Have you played Atari today?'"

comes out so do the shutterbugs. So once you've got your photos up on
the Web all you've got left to do is to find a way to print out quality
pictures and send them off to all your loved ones.
