Russia Wants to Launch Manned Mission to Mars
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/07/05/2159201

Raul654 writes "The Maimi Herald, via the Associated Press, [0]is
reporting that Russia wants to launch a manned mission to mars. The
article says that the Russians are hoping to work closely with the
European Space Agency and/or NASA. The 6 person, 440 day trip would
cost around $20 billion. Should be interesting to see how this shapes
up. See also [1]here for mirror article."

Get Ready For The Simputer
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/07/05/2234223

EccentricAnomaly writes: "CNN is reporting that the [0]Simputer [1]will
roll out next month. The Simputer is a handheld computer running
GNU/Linux starting at around $214 and is aiming to be an affordable
computer for the third world that can be used even by the illiterate
with its text-to-speech features. From the Simputer website: "The
Simputer is a low cost portable alternative to PCs, by which the
benefits of IT can reach the common man." Slashdot ran a story in
[2]May 2001 reporting the launch of the Simputer project." The same
Reuters story is [3]also found at the Hindustan Times.

The Nokia 7650 Cell Phone w/ Integrated Camera
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/07/05/2030224

[0]Unstrung writes "Nokia has just started shipping, in Europe, its
first [1]mobile phone with a digital camera onboard, unleashing on the
unsuspecting continent a device with roughly the same mischief-making
potential as the office photocopier – but in a package you can take to
the bar on a Friday night." It's 640x480, and doesn't look clunky. In
    short, me want.

Is There Such a Thing as "Too User Friendly"?
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/07/04/2341202

[0]rtphokie asks: "The story about the TiVo get-together along with
some recent trials and tribulations rolling out a knowledge base along
with the time I've spent recently helping my 80 year old grandfather
with this VCR and TV has gotten me thinking about user interfaces and
the elusive "user-friendly" label. When someone who thinks of
themselves as 'non computer savvy' works with a gadget like TiVo and
compains that it's 'too complicated', how should we react? Why are
users immediately forgiven for not even taking the least amount of
effort to look for a solution to their confusion in the manual. The
tendency has always been to blame the interface and ultimately the
engineers who designed it but isn't there a point where users have got
to share some of the blame? Why do today's software and consumer
electronics users expect to be able to fire up their new toy and
magically have a complete understanding of how to use it?"

Cryogenic Mouse Mod
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/07/05/137223

[0]mrsaggy writes "When you get sick of putting an aluminium case on
your PC, and lighting up the keyboard, here is something you can do
[1]with your optical mouse. Does anyone know where I can get a Han Solo
lego figure ?" Thats a pretty funny mod. Ya don't see many mouse mods,
and that one is pretty cool.

Seiko TV Watch is now 20 years Old
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/07/05/2026209

[0]TheGreatOrangePeel writes "In 1982 the Seiko "[1]Television Watch"
became available to buy. Now, 20 years later, the watch has become a
bit of a rare item to find. When it was available new, it contained the
following: 1-1/4" LCD Screen on wristwatch, Shirt pocket receiver,
Case, Earphones, Owner's Manual." Apparently the small wonder is still
    the smallest TV commercially produced.

Blender Goes Open Source

[0]Christoffer Green writes " This morning, the NaN shareholders have
reached an agreement on the conditions for a [1]new future for Blender.
In general it means that the Blender Foundation can execute it plans,
to continue developement as an open source project." Perhaps some
ambitious soul will bolt a reasonable interface onto the 3D app.

Review: Men In Black II
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/07/05/1347237

The first Men In Black came out of nowhere five years ago. Barry
Sonnenfeld stole the box office that summer with the original, strange,
hilarious, spoofy sci-fi comedy. Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones were
the perfect pair for this inventive "who-are-the-aliens-in-our-midst"
romp, playing secret agents working for a super-secret government
agency keeping an eye on beings from outer space. It was perfect for
the era of the still-vibrant X-Files. The sequel, inevitably, has lost
some of the surprise. But it's still plenty of fun. Spoilage warning:
plot discussed, not ending, not that it matters here.

Is Profiling Useless in Today's World?
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/07/05/1457231

[0]rngadam writes "gprof doesn't work in Linux multithreaded programs
without a [1]workaround that doesn't work [2]that well. It seems that
if you want to use profiling, you have to look for [3]alternatives or
agree with RedHat's Ulrich Drepper that "[4]gprof is useless in today's
world"... Is profiling useless? How do you profile your programs? Is
the lack of good profiling tools under Linux leading us in a world of
bloated applications and killing Linux adoption by the embedded
developers? Or will the adoption of a LinuxThreads [5]replacement solve
    our problems?"

Sony Hard Drive Recorder for Cars
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/07/05/1448234

blues5150 writes "Sony has introduced the [0]Sony MEX-1HD. This is an
in-dash CD/Receiver with a 10 giagbyte hardrive built in to rip CD's at
8X speed. It also has an auxilliary input that allows connection of an
MP3 player, tape, MD player, and/or an optional Sony plug-and-play XM
Satellite Radio tuner. The price is a little steep at $1,499.99, but
it's still nice to see a major car audio manufacturer delivering what
    the public wants."

Hey, I'm the first to admit that creating great animation can be quite
a challenge. Especially if you're trying to find an animation program
that can help you work with bitmap and vector images but won't break
the bank. Well listen up Linux- loving animators, because this is your
    lucky day.
