Spielberg Denied Crack at Star Wars
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/07/08/2033235

loonix_gangsta writes "The [0]BBC is running a blurb on the disclosure
of Star Wars helmsman George Lucas not allowing Spielberg to direct one
of the Star Wars movies. According to [1]Ananova Steven had actually
    begged George for the job."

Scientific Battlegrounds in Diets
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/07/08/2311242

There's an interesting article currently carried by the NYTimes (free
reg. yada yada) that talks about [0]the world of dieting, National
Institutes of Health, Atkins as well as low-carb vs low-fat. The
interesting thing, from a scientific perspective, is the sheer lack of
study - and the reticence from the scientific community to question the
    party line.

Video Games Found To Decrease Brain Activity
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/07/08/2029221

Richard C writes "A Japanese researcher, Akio Mori, from the Nihon
University's College of Humanities and Sciences, claims to have found a
[0]link between the playing of video games and the balance of activity
in the brain. It is also claimed that this effect can cause behavioural
changes, such as lack of concentration, difficulty with social
association, and short temper. These effects are also thought to be, to
some extent, nonreversible." I was gonna say something witty and
insightful here, but I can't think of anything. At least I can't make a
windows machine stable enough to run Neverwinter or my brain would be
    toast.

Rep. Boucher Outlines 'Fair Use' Fight
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/07/08/2026257

    A reader writes "AtNewYork.com is [0]reporting: U.S. Congressman Rick
Boucher, moving to strengthen "fair use" provisions under federal
copyright law, said he is introducing a bill that would essentially
restrict the record industry from selling copy-protected CDs."

OSI Launches Certification Program With Logo
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/07/08/1757255

[0]Lao-Tzu writes "The [1]Open Source Initiative has launched an [2]OSI
certification program. The OSI has trademarked a logo looking like a
keyhole for their use as a graphical certification mark. [3]Python.org
is the first website to carry the new [4]OSI logo." One might ask what
    took so long.

Security Gatherings for the Little Guys
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/07/08/1846234

[0]NeedaFirewall writes: "With all of the recent [1]vulnerability
announcements and increased concern about terrorism, a lot of folks are
starting to take security and privacy more seriously, both at the
network and node levels. Large companies can afford to send their IT
people to detailed technical security conferences offered by the likes
of [2]SANS, [3]Blackhat, and others. Some of these cost thousands of
dollars for a single seminar, class, or other event. Small companies
and individual programmers, network admins, etc (like me!) often can't
afford these. Where can they go to learn more about security? Are there
quality security conferences, seminars, trade shows, and the like out
there that the little guys can afford? Particularly broad-scope
gatherings that can teach these 'security newbies' the basics and alert
them to the most pertinent threats?"

Talk To Xanth Creator Piers Anthony
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/07/08/1852245

Not only is [0]Piers Anthony one of the world's most popular fantasy
authors (his [1]books have been science fiction and fantasy staples for
decades) but he has been using Linux and StarOffice 5.2 for the past
year. This is your opportunity to ask Piers about either the technical
aspects of using Linux and StarOffice to produce fiction or about his
upcoming work (new Xanth novels coming soon!) or almost anything else.
We'll forward 10 of the highest-moderated questions to Piers tomorrow,
and will run his answers (verbatim, as always) as soon as he gets them
    back to us.

Quake For the Blind
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/07/08/1749232

[0]Kirby-meister writes: "An [1]interesting article on The Boston Globe
talks of a company, ZForm, which has modified Quake for the
visually-impaired. The article also goes into an interesting discussion
on how visual our world is becoming, possibly leaving the
    visually-disabled behind the technological advances."

SysInfo
http://software.linux.com/articles/view/1517/

So, you've just scored a job as a Unix sysadmin. Congrats. Now you
gotta gather data about your systems, decide what you've got, and what
your company needs to purchase. You need to find out the system model
for all of your Sun's, HP's, and Linux systems, how much RAM each
system has... and that's just the beginning.
