Public Software Fund's First Project
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/07/11/0040210

[0]Russ Nelson writes "The [1]Public Software Fund's first project has
been funded for two months worth of development. Tom Jennings (of
[2]Fidonet fame) will be writing software to do peer-to-peer file
sharing of free software RPM packages, improving the existing free
    software packages [3]up2date, [4]/current/, and [5]BitTorrent. This
will keep new distro releases from being [6]slashdotted."

I Believe You Have My Stapler
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/07/11/0052229

[0]yack0 writes "After three years of demand and countless calls,
emails and letters, you can finally buy a Red Swingline Stapler.
Hooray! As noted in this [1]wall street journal article and confirmed
by this page at the Swingline Stapler [2] web site you can now pick up
a Red Swingline stapler for merely twice the price of a plain black
stapler. However, a colleague of mine says that the online order form
is reading around $16 for his right now. Now all the cubicle dwelling
prairie dogs can get one step closer to burning down the building." The
red stapler has become some sort of [3]cult icon at this point.

Digital DJ Turntable
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/07/10/1934221

    [0]Daniel Gomez-Ibanez writes "I made a digital turntable - it stores
digital audio and plays it back like a record player. This lets you
scratch the audio from a CD. I like it because there's no 'computer'
involved- a four year old can figure it out. There's a [1] description
here." Daniel also has a more descriptive web page on the
[2]inspiration and design of this beast.

Software Engineering at Microsoft
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/07/10/2139207

an_mo writes "A link to a google cached document is floating around
some mailing lists containing some info about [0]microsoft software
engineering. In particular the document contains juicy bits about the
development of a large project like NT/2K. Some examples: Team size
went from 200 (NT3.1) to 1400 (Win2k). Complete build of win2k time is
8hrs on 4way PIII and requires 50GB of hard drive space. Written/email
permission required for checkins by the build team." The [1]HTML
version on Usenix's site is much nicer than Google's auto-translated
    version.

US Army to Test Laser Based Mine Clearing Device
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/07/10/219254

QueueEhGuy writes "[0]Yahoo News is running a [1]Reuters story
indicating that the United States will soon be testing a laser which
"will either explode or evaporate the explosives in the device which
can be up to 250 yards away.." It's about time, I was starting to think
that we'd never blow stuff up with light." New Scientist has [2]another

Firm Pays 6.5 Million for Fax Spamming
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/07/10/165211

[0]Geopoliticus writes "[1]This article over at the Chicago Tribune
tells of a car dealership in St. Louis that will pay up to 6.5 million
to people it sent junk faxes to. Now, if we could just get this kind of
settlement for all the crap in my inbox I could stay unemployed
forever." If I got a quarter for each piece of junkmail in my inbox, it
would cover having a pizza delivered to my house every day, and still
have enough left over to get a few comics to read each day while I ate!

Eavesblogging the Internet Law Program
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/07/10/1820236

Last week the [0]Berkman Center held their second annual [1]Internet
Law Program, an intensive course in (surprise) internet law and
developments. You probably didn't spend the time/money to attend, but
the topics covered are interesting enough (to me anyway) to check it
out even second-hand. Dan Gillmor attended and posted his notes: [2]Day
    1, [3]Day 2, [4]Day 3, [5]Day 4, [6]Day 5 part 1 and [7]Day 5 part 2.
Donna Wentworth was there, trying to [8]record the seminar in
real-time; hopefully she's learned her lesson. There is tons of
interesting stuff in there - it's worth your time to read through if
you have any interest in the subject matter at all.

Warner Bros. plans 'Superman vs. Batman' Movie
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/07/10/1540238

[0]ReadParse writes "The Sacramento Bee is running an [1]AP story about
Warner Bros' plans to produce a Batman vs. Superman movie. It's kind of
hard to imagine anybody but Christopher Reeve as the Man of Steel --
    somebody check Michael Keaton's schedule."

http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/07/10/1524231

[0]nicholast writes with this "article describing the growing use of
[1]open-source collaboration methods in biology. The subtitle and main
question is: Can a band of biologists who share data freely
out-innovate the corporate researchers who hoard it?"

A Linux User Goes Back
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/07/10/1343237

An anonymous reader says "A friend of mine recently switched to using
Windows XP after three and a half years of Linux. I thought the
community might benefit from reading [0]his story. Even as a dedicated
Linux user, I agree with many of his points. 'Unix on the desktop" has
come along way in recent years, yet could still stand much improvement.
It is no longer an issue of having a fancy GUI (KDE can't get much
better), but rather the real problems lie in the foundation.' Some of
his points are wrong, but it's a reasonable article.

When I was first introduced to Linux, the price tag appealed to me. But
as I learned more about it, I realized that the true beauty of this OS
wasn't its price or power. The backbone of Linux is its community. Open
Source projects work because the whole community is able to get
involved and provide feedback. This increases activity and generally
    achieves better results.
