Tom Jennings (of [2]Fidonet fame) will be writing software to do peer-to-peer file sharing of free software RPM packages, improving the existing free software packages [3]up2date, [4]/current/, and [5]BitTorrent. This will keep new distro releases from being [6]slashdotted." Hooray! As noted in this [1]wall street journal article and confirmed by this page at the Swingline Stapler [2] web site you can now pick up a Red Swingline stapler for merely twice the price of a plain black stapler. However, a colleague of mine says that the online order form is reading around $16 for his right now. Now all the cubicle dwelling prairie dogs can get one step closer to burning down the building." The red stapler has become some sort of [3]cult icon at this point. This lets you scratch the audio from a CD. I like it because there's no 'computer' involved- a four year old can figure it out. There's a [1] description here." Daniel also has a more descriptive web page on the [2]inspiration and design of this beast. In particular the document contains juicy bits about the development of a large project like NT/2K. Some examples: Team size went from 200 (NT3.1) to 1400 (Win2k). Complete build of win2k time is 8hrs on 4way PIII and requires 50GB of hard drive space. Written/email permission required for checkins by the build team." It's about time, I was starting to think that we'd never blow stuff up with light." New Scientist has [2]another story, complete with nifty graphic. The [3]Zeus homepage has a few pictures and specs. Now, if we could just get this kind of settlement for all the crap in my inbox I could stay unemployed forever." If I got a quarter for each piece of junkmail in my inbox, it would cover having a pizza delivered to my house every day, and still have enough left over to get a few comics to read each day while I ate! You probably didn't spend the time/money to attend, but the topics covered are interesting enough (to me anyway) to check it out even second-hand. Dan Gillmor attended and posted his notes: [2]Day 1, [3]Day 2, [4]Day 3, [5]Day 4, [6]Day 5 part 1 and [7]Day 5 part 2. Donna Wentworth was there, trying to [8]record the seminar in real-time; hopefully she's learned her lesson. There is tons of interesting stuff in there - it's worth your time to read through if you have any interest in the subject matter at all. I thought the community might benefit from reading [0]his story. Even as a dedicated Linux user, I agree with many of his points. 'Unix on the desktop" has come along way in recent years, yet could still stand much improvement. It is no longer an issue of having a fancy GUI (KDE can't get much better), but rather the real problems lie in the foundation.' Some of his points are wrong, but it's a reasonable article. But as I learned more about it, I realized that the true beauty of this OS wasn't its price or power. The backbone of Linux is its community. Open Source projects work because the whole community is able to get involved and provide feedback. This increases activity and generally achieves better results. ================================================== Copyright (c) 2002 OSDN. All rights reserved.
